#OperaisOpen

In 2018, Julie launched an international project which seeks to prove that opera is open to anyone who wishes to attend, regardless of their income, previous education, or age. Although most opera houses have made great efforts to create programs which aim to make opera affordable to everyone, those who have never been to the opera still often feel that the art form remains closed to them. Known as the “down to earth diva,” who came from a family of modest means with no background in classical music, Julie is the perfect ambassador for this project as opera was opened to her at a young age.

Julie uses her active presence on social media as a vehicle to promote this concept. She does so by:

1)  posting content to "open up" the operatic process to her followers and the followers on the @opearisopen account, giving them a behind-the-scenes look, and answering questions in her posts and stories.

2) posting about the initiatives which dissolve financial barriers, educate or seek to include a broader public at each venue where she sings. (She informs her followers about student tickets, group tickets, senior tickets, last minute tickets etc.)

3) holding contests on her social media for a pair of tickets. To win, one of her followers must bring a guest that has never attended the opera. She then meets the winner, and shares his/her opinion on social media about their experience.

4) encouraging her colleagues and the companies where she sings to use the hashtag #operaisopen to help spread the message that opera is truly open to anyone.
